you have to tax it.Road tax is no longer transferred.
...but the salesman might have said that he would pay the VED as part of the deal....so he would be doing the "taxing" for you. Hadn't you better ask him?
If they're going to do it for you they would have had to ask you for your insurance certificate, so it looks like it's down to you but still worth checking.
As above, plus you can't tax it until it's insured anyway. (When you tax it online the system automatically checks the motor insurance database to ensure that a valid policy exists for it):
https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-tax
you can tax it on line here: https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-tax
using the green slip (V5C/2)
Buenchico, I suspect the dealer could tax it on their insurance.
They can, Hopkirk, but as soon as the dealer sells the vehicle that tax is invalid.
Do dealers sell cars taxed these days?

Lots of dealers now give 5 days or so of insurance to allow you time to take out your own insurance after you've got it home.
To add to the answers, if you are trading in your car you will receive a refund Cory.
