Sorted, sanded it with fine sand paper then fine emery paper. Much better still reflective but much less so. Just thought I'd share this with you.

good job ! .now the bizzies will not think you're trying to dodge speed cameras !!
for future reference, I've been told (I don't know how reliably) that some plates are more reflective than others, so it might be worth shopping round if you're in the market..

minty, the speed camera dodging stuff makes them more reflective so that it cannot get a picture, though I don't think they work anyway. Mine is still speed camera friendly!
Now that you've prepared the surface all you need is a couple of coats of matt and voila !
