Personalised Number Plates Costs ??

Anyone have personalised number plates, or, more importantly, know the full costs involved please??
Obviously there's the cost of buying the plate itself, plus all the buyers fees, vat, etc.
Then there's the assignment fee of £80, although I've heard this is not always applicable.
Plus, I'm hearing if you wish to put a plate on retention, there's an annual charge .... but I'm also being told it's free for 10 years, then you can apply to renew it for free.
It's a minefield trying to find out what's what.
Does anyone have the correct info of what happens when you buy a personalised number ??
Does it matter where you buy from, as to what fees are involved ??

I think my mate paid £5,000 to buy the plate and £80 to transfer it.

OH has got a plate on retention, and it costs about £15 per year until you want to put it on a car. As far as I know, there are no free years.

It's just that I've read/seen conflicting stories on other websites - I'm thinking that this annual charge for retaining the plate, might be charged by the firm that you're buying from, 'cos according to the gov.uk website it's free.

When I spotted a personalised plate this morning I couldn't help but think of it as a self-indulgent waste of money, but I was more concerned that someone would name their child KR65 YPW.

We have 3 P/plates, have just put one on retention certificate as we are changing a car shortly,
Doing that cost £80. and is valid for 10 years according to the small print.

Once they've sold you the plate it's nowt to do with them, if you choose to put it on retention you pay £80, and a certificate is valid for 10 years.

A quick update for anyone who's interested .... after a phone call, I've found out that the annual cost of £25, for putting the plate on retention, was abolished a few years ago.
Your certificate lasts for 10 years, after which you'll need to renew it for free.
It's £80 to assign a number to a car and £80 when you want to take it off; so if you decide to sell your car with your personalised number on, it'll cost you £160 to take it off your current car and assign it to your new car.

Yea you're right, there is no annual fee - but there used to be ..... which is why I was getting conflicting stories :)
