Cost Of Changing Brakes On Car

Hello everyone, my car had a service at the weekend, and I was advised to get my brakes changed in the new year because they're 75% worn. They quoted £200 (Ford Dealership), sounded a bit much? Not knowing a lot about cars... is this the right amount to expect to pay?

depends what they are quoting to do. For new pads and discs all round that's pretty good. Pads only then not so much.

Hmm thanks everyone, I'll shop around a bit and see what different garages say. Always wary of the 'cheapest' ones though, as I don't want to be skidding about everywhere after a bodge job!

Had a letter from my mortgage company in September stating that as we were 75% of the way through the year they'd like me to pay the remaining 25% so they could profit massively while gawping in amazement at my gullibility.

What is the point of paying for 100% of something but only using 75%? Are they offering a discount at the time of fitting or a refund
for the useless bit at the end?

anthro-nerd, I really think you need to find out what the quoted £200 includes - how else can you make a comparison ('I'll do it for £100. 0h, I didn't include for that' syndrome).

Front Brake Pads, a decent set £30 Approx, an hours work £50. a straight forward job.

I once went to KF for an exhaust .

Depending on the mileage and how you drive you might need the discs changing as well. Since the demise of asbestos pads have got harder and the disc rotors wear. They usually last about the life of 2 sets of pads. You can see from Flonska's link that can double the cost. Most garages also change the brake fluid as part of the exercise - it should be changed regularly as it is hygroscopic (absorbs water from the atmosphere) which reduces its boiling point.
