Jump leads are fine so long as you're somewhere where you can connect them to another car. I have one of these, which has saved my skin on a couple of occasions:

They really are! You charge them up with a standard USB charger, which just happens to have the same connector as my mobile. Then, when needed, you just connect the jump leads to your car battery, switch it on, wait 30 seconds and it sends enough power to turn the car's starter motor over.
