what manufacturers do a car with cvt and how closely are they related to the original DAFs ?

I think that the DAF was vacuum operated. Are modern ones still like that or have electronics taken over?

I had a DAF 33 many years ago and used it all over Europe. It eventually fell to pieces, although the engine and CVT box did not, and we looked around for similar vehicles. Without going through my motoring history we had until recently a superb Fiat Panda selecta with such a box and last year bought a new Nissan Micra with a full CVT gearbox. Still, if anything even better, a superb gearbox.

The Rover 100 (Metro) had a CVT auto box. It used two metal mesh belts that operated on two cones that moved either towards or away from each other to change the gear ratio.

The Rover CVT stood for Constantly Variable Transmission, not 'Velocity' as you mentioned. DAF had the Variomatic so I think you've confused Constant Velocity Transmission with Constant Velocity Joint.

seem to remember the fiesta was available with a cvt gearbox or at least a version of it.probably not unlike the rover one. how are ya kebebmeister?

I was in hysterics the first time I drove a CVT Metro. The engine revs were disproportionate to the gear, so you could put your foot down and all you'd get is a loud engine rev sound whilst the CVT box tried to catch up with it. You could play songs on it! :)

Yeah, I'm not too bad v64paul, thanks! How's you?

Escort and Fiesta autos had CVT gearboxes - but they were awful - do not buy an escort auto under any circumstances - they are more trouble than they are worth
Wasn't there a volvo available with this?
Yes Volvo offered the choice of "normal" or CVT automatic gearboxes - or at least they did in the mid 90s
