I used to do in the days before wheel arches were lined with plastic; nowadays I don't bother.

What sort of metal? Galvanised steel, aluminium? For the last Lord knows how many years car manufacturers have been lining wheel arches to prevent corrosion. How old is your vehicle?

what is this washing cars of which you speak? Mine gets done once a year when it is serviced and the rest of the time God does it.

What vehicle is it? It could well be that the whole area is made from galvanised steel. It was common, many years ago, for cars to fail MoTs because of corrosion around the mounting points for the suspension; using galvanised steel in the area was one of the solutions.

i think the whole area is just steel it's very course though doesn't look galvanised

coarse? That's probably underbody sealant...if not plastic liners.
