gps pda - help!!!

Basically my boyfriend has a PDA and wants to use it for GPS Sat Nav.

I therefore bought a GPS receiver, off ebay, for him for Christmas. Was planning to use his PDA car adapter and just plug the GPS receiver into the PDA serial port.

However, when the GPS receiver arrived I read the instructions. They are in VERY badly translated English so I can't really fully understand them.

They talk about an 'optional' cable which plugs into the lighter socket and powers BOTH the GPS receiver and the PDA.

My question is, if I don't purchase one of these cables and just use a power cable to my PDA, will the GPS receiver need some sort of power source? Or does it just power itself from the PDA via the serial port.

Hope the question makes sense. Any help will be appreciated.

can you give us the name/model number of the receiver and PDA?

I would guess that the receiver plugs into the PDA itself, and maybe draws power from the PDA's battery. or perhaps it has its own battery?

Does it have bluetooth connectivity?

It is a Haicom 204E Wired GPS receiver. Not bluetooth.

Looked on the website but it is purely a copy of the instruction manual!!!!!

hmm, from looking at the site it seems to draw power from the PDA, with an optional cable allowing you to plug it into the cigar lighter.

it has a PS/2 plug though; make sure your PDA can accept this, otherwise you'll need a PS/2-(your adapter) converter
