I paid in the old bangers are Aldi this morning but they were a bit sniffy. Cash was refused in a garage the other week. Do you think the retailers are using this to edge us towards a cashless society?

I use Bacs and cards, but I did put a bank note in an envelope for the postman and taped it to the front door the night before he came!! Quite safe because noone comes past our house or up the drive except him, our son or invited people. We had to go to a bank to get some cash because we never have much on us or in the house these days.
Jackdaw, I do accept your reasoning though. I suppose when Covid is less of a problem I will need some cash for some things. I pay my friend who is also our dog groomer by cash, but at the moment by BACS. And yes charity tins and buckets can only take cash. I can't imagine a cashless society ever happening.
It wouldn't even occur to me to pay by cash in a supermarket or garage. I automatically reach for my card (as I would be doing even if Covid hadn't come along). So I'm not getting cash refused, simply because I never proffer it in the first place.
Prior to Covid, the only places I used cash were at the local burger van, at the launderette, at the barbers and in some car parking machines. I now use apps on my phone to pay for my car parking and the launderette now accepts cards. Losing most of my hair through chemotherapy means that I've not been to the barbers since before Covid but, when I do finally get back there, I'll be surprised if I can't pay by card (as I'd prefer to do anyway). The only place I still need cash is at the burger van (where the owner sprays all notes and coins upon receipt with disinfectant and again when handing them out as change).
