I can't ever remember sitting any exam when I became a MOT tester. This was just motor cars and light vehicles though, not including taxis and motorbikes.

Are you already a qualified mechanic with practical experience? Have they explained what is expected and how long the exam is?

Incidently, I just went on a two day course at a MOT Inspectorate centre (Marshals of Cambridge - airfield side). Thinking about it, there may have been a multi choice type test, not sure, but it was likely to be common sense as well as such things as tread depths, tyre types, how large chips/cracks are allowed in the windscreen, rust/holes in the floor and permitted distance from a load bearing member etc...
i sat a couple of papers and a practical test when i quailified as an h.g.v. inspector. this does'nt qualify me to issue a certificate, only to inspect a truck to the required standard. so i would imagine you would have to. the general thing is that in common with all of the courses i have been on you get coached so much in order to pass the tests at the end. it will all be related to what you have done on the course.
