The part you should be given is the V5C/2 new keeper supplement of the V5C, not the whole document.

Unless you've managed to get the V5C 'new keeper' slip from the seller, you'll need to send a cheque or postal order for £25, made payable to 'DVLA, Swansea', with the form.

Theoretically you can pursue the seller for the £25 you've had to pay out due to him/her not providing you with the 'new keeper' slip but, in practice (given the costs and hassle of going to court), it's simply not worth it.

A seller should not give a buyer the V5 hs needs to send it off or transfer it on line, did you get a V5C/2 green slip? do you have a receipt? You can use a V62 to get a new V5 if one does not arrive in the post.

I don't know where you got that from, elliemay, but it is not correct.

The V5C does not record ownership of a vehicle. It records who is the Registered Keeper. They may be one and the same, but they need not be. There is no register of vehicle ownership and in fact the V5C states in big letters at the top of page 1 "This document is not proof of ownership" and then underneath "It shows who is responsible for registering and taxing the vehicle."

The Registered Keeper details, bednobs. I'm not repeating this for the sake of pedantry. It is a very important difference.
