Car Theft

I have just watched a doorbell video of a car theft near me - it was a keyless car and took less than 10 seconds to relay the signal and drive off.

What happens when the car is parked up? How do they get it going again? How do they open the doors if the car is automatically locked?

I think the devices they use capture the code from the real key & so can probably reproduce it - thereby becoming a duplicate key in effect.
they will have copied the signal to their own device and can use it at will. That is why I always disable keyless go, totally pointless device that serves no purpose.
" How do they open the doors if the car is automatically locked?" - both the car and key/card send out a proximity signal, when close enough the doors are open and the car mobilised. So first get near the front door and capture the signal from any nearby key/card, recor it's signal and transmit near the door and voila car thinks the key/card is near and opens. Now the tea leaf has the signal recorded and can use at will.
My car has "keyless" entry & start. Fortunately it's not worth nicking!
ideally turn off keyless go but if not, store the key/card away from the front door.
I was told that they may be using something like this:

Thanks, all. I'm happy that my car is far too old to be keyless.

davebro, some scum steal older cars to use for driving round and stealing catalytic converters or commit other crime - don't think your car won't be nicked just because it is older.
"totally pointless and serves no purpose". I disagree, as I've said before.
Technology has moved on...more recent versions can't be copied.

Tell us again the positives for keyless entry and ignition, gingejbee, as I missed your earlier post(s) on the subject.

What happens if you have the fob (whatever it is called) in your pocket as you walk past the car to go for a walk? Does it automatically unlock?
The car does not automatically unlock, barry. You have to press the unlock button on the fob.
Not unless you press the key button or door handle button.
Convenience is the main advantage of keyless entry/ignition. You can keep the key in a zipped pocket or handbag and never have to fumble to dig it out to unlock the doors. If you have the key on your person you just walk up to the car and open it with the handle - it only unlocks when you pull the handle. To lock it there is a button on each handle that you press. With some cars you can also wave your foot under the boot and the lid will open; handy if you have your hands full. To start the car you press the start/stop button but you can do it with the key in your pocket/handbag so long as you are inside the car.

So you need to have the fob in your hand or your hand on the car door? Is this wrong?
"Whether you’ve got your hands full of shopping, a sleeping child to carry, or you can’t quite remember which bag you put the car keys in, being able to get into your car without a key can be a lifesaver. As long as you have the fob on you and are in range of your car, the doors and boot can be easily accessed at the touch of a button or the wave of a foot. "

Thanks, bhg - can't say I've ever had a problem getting the car key in to my hand.
This is my first "keyless" car & I think it's great.
Be careful dave.. or you may end up with a car less key.
Not much car crime around here & my key is "miles" from my car & 30 ft from my front door.
You do get very used to just walking up to the car, opening it, starting it and driving off, all without having to fumble for a key. Then comes the day when it won't open and you have a little curse before you realise that you've left your key in your other trousers and have to go back into the house to get it.
They wait in car parks and clone your signal when you lock it :-)
