I have an old car, not worth much a bit like me. I would like advice about having an accident. Would the insurance company pay out less because of the value of the car.? The insurance is actually quite expensive. Would it be better for me to take out third party insurance instead of fully comp? Thanks

Thanks for the advice everyone. It’s not quite due yet, but I definitely will shop around.
jno, is your OH older than you? Or can you think of another reason why the opposite is happening in your case re price going down with added driver? Or did you add a driver after the policy had started?
Nobody can really say how much motor insurance will be unless they know all the personal circumstances. Even where you live can make a huge difference to the price, add in age, points on licence, medical problems and the difference can be several hundred pounds.
It depends which driver is the greater assessed risk. I got a small reduction by adding a (presumably) safer driver.
Based on last year’s premium being £360, I suspect you are one of those who have been loyal to your insurance company, renewing year after year – as a reward for your loyalty you have been shafted by them.

If your renewal is due, you could log on to your insurer’s website and see how much your premium would be as a new customer – you might find they offer a competitive quote.

For many years, I insured my car with Directline; each year (after receiving my renewal notice) I would ring them and advise that I did not want to renew the policy – when asked why, I would tell them that I had renewed the insurance (under the same terms) for a cheaper price with Directline.

There is some new law that is supposed to stop Directline doing what it was doing (offering cheaper insurance to new customers); if that law is successful, my premiums will have to increase since you (as a loyal customer) will no longer be subsidising me (who shops around).
Hymie, I've been with Direct Line for years, too. The renewal quotes through the post have been cheaper than the previous year's for the last three years.

I still phone them and tell them I want it cheaper - and always get the discount. I'm sticking with them because they were brilliant when we were involved in a very serious, horrendous accident.
Despite having more than 20 years NCD, Directline’s prices became uncompetitive – having been with them for many years, I was not worried that they were not the cheapest by £20 or so. But once it reached over £100, I rang them asking them to match the quote, which they would not do.
It's not all about the cheapest for me. I want to make sure I get the service, quickly, efficiently when I need it. I always go for one of the Which Best Buys.
If you are buying third party cover, it doesn’t matter much how bad the insurance company is – they are not going to pay you anything.
