The tax on both the Qashqai and the X-Trail is the same, at £165 pa, for vehicles registered from April 2017 onwards. For older models, the tax on a Qashqai is £180pa, whereas it's between £220 pa and £360 pa (depending upon the exact version) for the X Trail.
A Quashqai will theoretically give you around 45 mpg (although I'd be amazed if you can achieve it in practice), whereas the equivalent figure for an X-Trail is around 38 mpg.
With a Quashqai, you might be able to get a model in an insurance group as low as 11 but some versions go up to Group 17. With an X-Trail you'll always pay more, as they're all within Groups 18 to 20.
