Abandoned Vehicle

There's a pull-in area come unofficial layby along the road not near to any houses, but not far form the dual acrriageway.

A car has been parked in it for a couple of weeks now. I've looked it up and its both taxed and MOT'd. It has a personalised number plate.

Shall I report it to the local council as an abandoned car , or to the police as potentially stolen or ignore it and mind my own business?

Are you sure it's not someone parking there every day and meeting someone to car-share?

You could report it to the council and police in case it has been reported as stolen, but if it's taxed and MOT'd it won't be classed as abandoned. If there are no parking restrictions the driver can park there until either the tax or MOT runs out if he wants to

Usually, if a car has been left for quite a time, Police put a "Police aware" notice on it. No harm in contacting them anyway.

Another possibility is that it is a stolen car on cloned plates

my car was abandoned in a faraway town some years back, nobody there reported it and it was there for 6 months. my insurance meanwhile of course had already paid me out which I was then able to buy a new car.

It's harmless to report it to the police just in case it's stolen.

mine was stolen as were many of mine through the troubles - about 4 or 5 over the years

Contact the police on 101, they'll have all the required information in order to do something about it - either they'll contact the registered keeper or pass the information on to the relevant agency.

That's how I've dealt with a similar situation before.

Only if it's uninsured and or untaxed.

If it's legally parked, insured and taxed, it's got nothing to do with the police...or anybody else for that matter.

No harm in letting the police know, and you may be helping to restore a stolen car to its unfortunate owner.
