I own a 2009 Jaguar x type that has 90,000 miles. I’ve owned it since 2019 and I paid £4,000 for it. On auto trader the X types this age with the same mileage are going for around £3500. I’ve been looking at Mercedes’ E class and bmw 5 series the same age as my Jag with roughly the same mileage, but they’re going for around £5000/£6000. Why are they such a big difference in price even though all three are luxury cars the same age and same miles?

The X type was a bit of a flop. It was a Ford Mondeo under the skin.
So you are Jack8991, as I suspected before!

Captain- yes lol

Zaks- yes but it’s still a luxury car and better equipped than a mondeo. The X type interior I would say probably looks better than a E CLASS
Do you have a petrol 3 litre Sovereign? The best X Type ...

Ellipsis- no it’s just 2.0 diesel
Ah, well, even so, I'd go with a similar Jag every time, because it's made in Britain ... amazing how often the so-called patriots would buy German or Japanese.
Question Author
Ellipsis- so why do you think the Mercedes E class and BMW 5 series same age same miles, roughly the same size as the X type, is much more expensive?
Supply and demand. Given that you've already got the Jaguar, I'd keep it for sure ... unless you're thinking of replacing it?
It was never the same quality as an E class or 5 series. There were something like 350,000 sold in 10 years of production when it had been hoped they’d sell 100,000 per year.

Ellipsis- I’m a bit bored of it now after 4 years and the manual gears do my head in I’d rather have an automatic. I’d like a bmw 530d
As a Jag man myself I can say the X type is not considered a proper Jag, it's a Mondeo with different clothes on and thus is not really in the same bracket as the other two. Used car prices, like most things are based purely on supply and demand. More people want the Merc or the Beamer. Simple as that really.
Question Author
Tora- I agree. Why do you think Jaguar made one of their cars based off a mondeo? I mean why purposely design a car to be like that?
Because Ford owned Jaguar at the time. But the other problem you have is that you had a manual ...
Simple answer….
cost. It also used a Ford engine block and used the same factory, albeit with 70% new tooling, where the Ford escort / van had been made in Halewood, Merseyside. Not exactly a recipe for success.
13:58, it was a Ford endeavour to get a medium saloon out there under the Jag badge with minimal design. Oddly enough my own XJR (X350) is also under the Ford umbrella but can trace it's DNA back through all previous XJs so that is considered a proper Jaaaag!

Don’t know if any of you have drove x types yourselves but it’s kind of underwhelming to drive. I mean, get it to 40mph and drop it into third gear, yeah it kind of pulls you back in your seat doing that with the torque, and at 70mph in 5th gear on the motorway it has some good overtaking power, but still, underwhelming
Also I'd say it's natural equivalent in the Merc/Beamer world are the C class and the 3 series. The S-Type (and the later XF) is pitched against the E-Class/5 series with the XJ being pitched against the S-Class/7 Series.
My mate had a 2L diesel X type. Dull as ditch water but very cheap on fuel.
Question Author
Tora- the reason I compare it to the e class and 5 series is because I’ve been parked up next to both of them and they were pretty much the exact same length. I’ve also been parked next to a 3 series and my x type was noticeably bigger
