Number Plate Query.

Yesterday, I saw a VW Golf, rh drive, with a type of number plate I haven't seen before. There was no country ID on it, just a VW logo where the country ID usually is. The format of the lettering/numbering was like this:

123 AA 1234

I've seen foreign plates, trade plates, military plates but never any in the format above. The vehicle was occupied by two men, aged roughly 25 - 30. Any ideas folks? TIA.

Do you know the registration number? Might be worth looking it up to see if it is UK registered.
Could it be a diplomatic registration?

Turkish, I think.

Turkish registration plates consist of letters and digits in combinations of 99 AB 999, 99 A 9999, 99 ABC 99, 99 AB 9999 or 99 A 99999 where

I am assuming the number stated in the question is an example but just entered it for curiosity even by closing the gaps in case it was a privatised plate. So no I don't know the number.

Thanks for the replies folks. It's not Turkish. The format contained nine digits but the examples given on Wiki have eight digits. I remember the first part of the number was 102. I thought about diplomatic plates but I couldn't find a matching sample. Besides, would young diplomats be driving round in a VW Golf? Tis a mystery! We may never know!
