Noise When Driving Any Direction Other Than Straight Ahead.

When I drive my car I have started to hear a low level burring noise. It is there nearly all the time and the only time it seems to go away is when I am driving directly forward. Any slight move of the steering wheel left or right and I can hear the noise.
Can anyone tell me what it might be please?

I should have also said that apparently there is a recall issue with my car relating to the steering rack. When I turn hard lock left or right there is a loud multiple clunking noise which sounds horrible. Could the 2 issues be related?

If there's a recall due to its steering rack and you hear horrible noises whilst turning I'd hazard a guess, yes!
Take it back, get it fixed for free. Then listen for bad noises.

Could be track rod end is worn.

Just do as 1ozzy suggests. Any garage worth its salt will road-test the vehicle after the steering rack has been fixed and they will comment on any noises they hear.

My first thought was the same as douglas's, although if the CV joints (constant velocity joints) were excessively worn they would make a knocking sound when turning. I would guess it's a problem with the steering rack/track rod ends. Sad to say, if that is the case, then the fix aint gonna be cheap. It never has been. Sorry.

Apart from the fact the car is under a recall for that exact issue 10c.

It could also be a wheel bearing but get the rack seen to first.

We have been able to get the appointment brought forward to 15th August. Better, but still a fortnight away.

Tell them about your noise, don't mention the recall or that it's booked in elsewhere. They have always been straight with me, never tried to rip me off and they will at least tell you if it is safe to drive. They might have appointments available this week, worth a go.

Oh poo. Maybe take a chance and drive to a local garage, tell them you're worried about the noises?

Yes, I think I will do that. The dealership has said that an independent body has assessed that the steering rack issue doesn't make it undrivable. But the super loud repeated clunks when on hard lock to the left or right at low speed still make me worry (as well as the burring noise when at higher speeds).
I have found someone locally who works on this type of car so I will see if he can put it on a ramp and have a look to give me some peace of mind for the next couple of weeks.

Now that's gotta be the CV joints. Classic symptoms of wear.

Usually accompanied by the steering wheel twitching from my experience.
