Why Would A Breakdown Recovery Mechanic Want To Know Who I Live With?

I had to call out breakdown recovery to tend my car (homestart). After he saw to my car, my mum and I thanked him at our front door and he asked, "Is it just you two living here?" Why ask that? I also told him I was thinking one day getting a better car than the 16 yo one I have now and he said he'd be interested in buying it if I decided to get rid of it.
