The RAC said that the cam belt on my H reg Renault 19 1.4 has gone. Is it a big job & is it worth doing ?

It depends how much damage was done when it went. You are probably be looking at �400 + typically, so due to the age and value of the car it wouldn't be worth it.


I think cam best going whicle in motion pretty much kills the engine. If i remember my fathers advice it causes the rods to bend and all sorts of other mess. I would personally cut my losses, take it to a salvage yard and use the cash to put towards another car.

It is very likely that no damage has been done to your engine as I am sure your car is only an 8 valve engine and is an old design, damage is caused by the valves hitting each other and bits dropping on to the pistons, this rarely happens with an 8 valve engine. It is likely that having a new cambelt fitted could cure the problem.

A very good answer from Toureman and worth a go. However, cam belt replacements can be a bit pricey.
