I just came across the story in Google news a few minutes ago.  You would think that someone would have noticed another huge ship and taken action to avoid it.

It's a bit like the Russian spaceship that crashed into the Moon; whoever was driving must have known where the moon was.

It all depends of the size and speed of these ships. A super tanker can take 7-8 miles to stop, even in an "emergency stop",  it can travel a mile before stopping.

Reinforces the saying that worse things happen at sea.

probly swerved to avoid dinghies?

It is believed the Stena Immaculate, which was travelling from Greece to the UK, was anchored at the time.

My local news says that the Solong was on auto pilot at the time of the collision.

As advised in two posts - by the time one ship can see the other, it may already be too late to avoid a collision because of the length of time it takes to stop.

And it appears that the moving ship was on autopilot, and I can only sumise that their computer has failed to register the other vessel, hence the collision.

Why would a ship be on autopilot (presumably without monitoring) in the world's busiest seaway?🙄

There should always be someone on watch but that's not always the case.  The ship didn't need to stop just turn to avoid a collision, plenty of time to do that if there's someone on the bridge

An apologist for the company on TV last night said how hard these crews work and need a rest between ports - 🙄

When viewing this, it's remarkable (and thankfully) how many of the crew were saved.

It does beg the question was the radar turned on?
