I have noticed recently that pedestrian crossings no longer beep when the green man is displayed. Can anyone tell me why this is?

are there a lot of robots in your area?
Pedestrian crossings never used to "beep" but pelican crossings did, this was to tell blind pedestrians when to cross. Perhaps this is a ploy by the government to stop paying disability allowances out!
dunno where you live, but they still beep round here!

Find out if it is a Pelican or a Puffin crossing. Puffins dont have the flashing amber, they act like ordinary traffic lights and I dont think they bleep.

It may also be that local residents have complained and its been silenced for that reason.

Or it could be as Toureman says..lol!
