Check if there is enough oil in the gearbox, also look at the color of the oil on the dipstick, it should be clear and red (usually) or maybe a light brown, but if it is dark brown and cloudy etc... and smells ''burned'' then you have a problem with the gearbox.
2. Check that the gear selector is actually moving the gearbox end of the system to the correct position when the lever is moved. maybe a loose cable or connector.
