Speeding fine

My boyfriend has just received a letter from police to say he was captured speeding 36 mph in a 30 mph zone.

So i am assuming he will get points on his licence? Can you tell me the implications of this? may sound silly but I dont know what this means? will insurance go up by lots?

also theres no photo to show the car which i thought they had to have?! I have actually worked for a council in the department that dealt with penalty charge notices and i know that if the photo is not clear etc then you can sometimes appeal successfully against the charge.. ?!
