Vauxhall (Opel) Astra oil press fault light

Here is another in the long list of problems with Astras. When the engine is still hot after a run the oil fault light comes on and only gradually fades after a minute or two. It can flicker occasionally while driving also. The oil is ok and level fine but I haven't changed the filter for almost 1 year. Would this be the cause of the problem or is there something more sinister lurking under the bonnet?

No more Astras or any other member of that family for me.

First of all it might simply be a faulty oil switch but if a new one doesn't change things then you may have low oil pressure caused by a worn oil pump or a sticking PRV or worn bearings. I would imagine this car is a few years old so it is entitled to some wear especially as you seem to avoid essential servicing that will reduce wear. Change the oil and filter making sure you use the correct multigrade oil and see if that makes a difference.
Stanley's right but did you put the right viscosity oil in when it was last serviced? sounds like it's too thin to me.

Thanks for both of your answers. Yes, I use semi-synth oil all of the time. I changed the oil again yesterday, new oil filter, new air filter and for good measure, new plugs although the others are only 3 months in the car. The fault light still comes on when starting the car and gradually fades but never fadesout altogether. This week I will change the oil switch if I can find it. As I look into the engine compart is it on lsh or rhs of engine block?
