My hubbie has a 1992 MX5, neither of us are mechanically minded and don't have a clue when it comes to cars. Does anyone have any suggestions as to why it does this, he has just had a new battery put in it as he was having problems starting it. It seems to do it when you slow down and drop gears and it's really annoying!!! It has out me off driving it now. I just wandered if there is anything we can do, or does it need professional attention?

its always hard to pin point a problem without having the car to view.

i always go for the easy option. firstly ide change the sparkplugs and distributor cap.. maybe even the plug leads. sounds like you could have an electrical problem.

starting problems are, in my opipion, usualy associated with the simple things listed above...

another alternative could be fuel supply.

Hi

Good ideas from the previous poster. As said could be electrical or fuel related. Deffinately worth changing plugs, ht leads and distributor cap. These things are fairly cheap and easy to do (have you got a Haynes manual?). Could also be an airleak somewhere around the inlet. This can cause a drop in revs. I might be inclined to change the airfilter as well and have a quick visual inspection of the fuel supply pipes and vacum pipes. A little trick you can try is to spray WD40 around the inlet when the car is idling. If you hear a change in revs it indicates an air leak. These things are worth trying before you shell out lots of money at a garage.

thankyou both so much for the advise, as I said we just don't have a clue, but we will try out your suggestions before we go any further.

good luck!

if you need to ask any more specific questions please feel free!!

sounds like you have an air leak. if you are not mechanically minded i would not attempt any of the previous suggestions, just take it to your local garage mechanic and he may spot a vacumn pipe has come off.
