Vibrating VW....

I've just bought a 1998 VW Passat Estate TDi with 70k on the clock. It's in excellent condition and has a full service history. I test drove it and it was fine but being a law abiding citizen I only took it up to 70mph! The other day - pending a holiday in France, I accidently accelerated up to 80mph on the motorway and it was like all hell had broken loose! It shook like mad - it seemed to come from the front - and as soon as I slowed down again it disappeared. My silly daughter said it must be a built in safety feature to stop me going over 70mph...but I'm not convinced! I've had both front wheels balanced and it's no better. Whilst the chap was doing it he said that the nearside CV boot had split but I presume that won't be the cause? Anybody any ideas.

get all ur wheels balancedand ask the garage to check for a buckled wheel or tyre

slight chance it could be a worn bush or engine mount. front wheel drive cars have a lot of srtess and strain put on them.

could try taking it for a fresh M.O.T. could be money well spent..

as the bhoy says, get a different garage to check the wheel balance, this happened to my dad and the first garage had done it wrong.after that check your shock absorbers if still happens.

If the CV gaiter is split then the CV joint could be damaged. It'll need replacing anyway before you lose the grease and get dirt in it. Try changing the tyres front to back and see if that makes a difference. Some cheap makes of tyre still vibrate regardless of balancing.

...just want to say thanks to you all for responding. I took the car to have the cv boot replaced and asked the garage man to balance the rear wheels - problem sorted!
