You do mean a Range Rover 3.5 EFi, don't you ? The Rangey uses a pre-engaged starter, so this sounds as if either the battery is a bit low on power or the starter motor is knackered. Before panicking and replacing anything expensive, though, give the battery a good charge and carefully check over the thick cables from battery to starter and the connections.

It's prob the battery. Its a common occurrence, the battery has enough power to light the dash and click the solenoid but not enough to turn the motor in the starter.

Try charging/replacing that first and foremost & let us know how you get on.

Its most likely that the main power contacts in the solenoid are knackered (technical term), what happens is that when you turn the key the solenoid attracts, thats the ''clunck'' and then when it reaches full engagement it should close a big set of contacts which turn the motor. It could also be the carbon brushes in the motor are worn out or even a simple broken cable inside the motor somewhere. You should remove the starter and test it off the engine to get further than this.
