when my car has about a quarter of a tank of petrol left,it starts to back fire and loose power, any ideas out there as to why this happens?

i would believe to think that your fuel pump has stopped working, hence when u get low fuel there's low pressure in the fuel pipe, making the mix into the cylinders leaner (more air than petrol) thus running hot and backfiring!

contamination in tank eg water it floats on petrol
Could also be the fuel pickup in the tank drawing air when fuel is low or the guage could be reading wrongly and you are out of fuel. Check this when the problem starts.
