hi, i was wondering if anyone knows what would cause a whinning sound when i depress the clutch pedal on my mondeo the gearbox is sound there are no problems changing gears .thanks in advance

Sounds like the clutch release bearing. It could be worn, failing or contaminated in some way.

Not usually a problem even if noisy. Has the clutch ever been replaced and what is the mileage on the car ?

cheers billynomates,just bought the car during the week,runs like a dream apart from the the noise it doesnt happen all the time.do i need to replace it and is it expensive or will it last .cheers

It may last a while but when you do need to replace the thrust bearing it would make sense to replace the clutch as well while it is all apart, false economy not to.

Probably best not to leave it too long though tamiya! If the bearing collapses in drive it could cause extensive damage as well as risk an accident.

does anyone know the cost to have the clutch release bearing fixed or can i do it reasonable mech knowledge i.e haynes book

Mondeo is the most difficult Ford car for a clutch change, it's not realy a DIY job. �300 minimum around my part of the world at small independant garages. As stanleyman says get the complete clutch done. Release bearings can whine for ages before they give up, but if the noise increases get it booked in.
