I have just been checking out the sites for personalised number lates. Am I understansing it right that you can now have any number plate you like as long as you register it with the DVLA? I have found loads from about 450 that have DOT in them, but are these genuine old ones or does the software just make it up? I have also found a site that is selling number plates for clients, these mustbe genuine ones riht? i am abit confused, (no change there then)

I think thats right, you can pick any combination you like, but of course you can't have one thats already issued! Just think 2 cars running around with the same reg, would cause really big problems!
I once used DVLA's website to check the availability of a certain number and it came back as unavailable. I thought that meant it had been issued, but some months later it came up for auction on the DVLA website. I guess that if DVLA think it has any value they will auction it and get as much as they can. One tip for you regarding "plate dealers". If you see a number on a dealers website, check other dealers for the same number and very often you will find it at a lower price. Also check DVLA's auction site.

Obviously you have to pick a L123 ABC type or a AB02 CDE type reg, don't think anyone's that stupid!
