Honda's used to be very quiet, especially their old 12 valve 1.3litre model.

Quietest engine I heard was the 1960s Vanden Plas Princess R with a 4.0 litre Rolls Royce engine in it. It idled at around 600rpm. Sweet!

Toy cars!
mercs have amazingly quiet engines.
Lexus 4.0 are peaches if looked after, their latest 4.3 is not quite as good.

Rolls Royce used to have a good advertising blurb.......

The only thing you hear whilst driving is the tick of the clock on the dash!

They had very noisy clocks.
There's quite a few - I've had BMW's hat were really quiet, but the quietest car I've had was a Lexus GS 400 - I had to look at the dash to make sure that the engine was still running.

hybrids like the toyota prius, when sitting in traffic or driving very slowly they dont even have the engine running, all you can hear is the brakes as the wheels are spinning.

You cant get quieter than that !!

Ford Taurus...sold in the USA is damn quiet
My Toyota corolla had a super quiet engine, I often tried to start it when it was running as I couldn't hear it. Also people crossing the road would jump to see a car so close before they heard it...... (is this a good thing ?)
