Thinking of buying a Volkswagen Golf (new shape) in a few months. I don't want anything thirsty on petrol, or high on insurance, so was looking at the 1.4 / 1.6 (Please do not try to tell me I should get a 2 litre !!) I do about 300 miles per week mainly motorway driving, and was looking for advice regarding build quality, reliability, general running costs etc. Thanks !

If you want economy it's got to be deisel.
My wife's bog standard 6 year old 1.6 Golf does 40 MPG on motorway/long runs. Terrific engine, but a hard ride.
The new golf is a v.heavy car and most lower power engines are sluggish and boring and won't get you out of trouble in motorway situations.....go for the diesel if you must.

Oh and make sure you get it from a reputable dealer, lots of VW ones tend to stitch you up.
