final drive

hi im just about 2 start a mechanics course at college an ive got to do an assignment for my interview and i was just wondering if anybody knows what the final drive does? ive got some ideas but just wanted to double check. thanks.

The final drive is part of the transmission on a vehicle,

The Transmission system transmits the drive from the engine to the driven wheels, through the clutch, then the gearbox, on rear drive vehicles through the propshaft to the rear axle diffrential then through a half shaft to each rear wheel.

The final drive is the name for the complete rear axle
