I personally have had Sony headunits for the past 10 years and never had a problem. JVC I find use cheap plastics in all but the top of the range units. Kenwood are generally good but they seem to be expensive for the top ones.
I can recommend JVC - depends on how much you're willing to spand. At the end of the day, it's more about speaker quality than the CD player itself.

I had a JVC head unit in my last car and even though it was just 100.00 I was really pleased with it's performance. It was even happy to play CD's that were too scratched to use on my other CD players. The only problem with it is that it did look a little cheap.

I've got a Pioneer stereo now on my astra which I'm also pleased with.

My girlfriend bought herself the cheapest head unit she could find and you can tell that there's a much lower quality to the sound and appearance. But, as saintjohnny said, the speaker quality is just as important.
