Drink Drive Disqualification

What happens if a person loses their licence abroad for drink driving - is their UK licence affected or only the ability to drive in the country of conviction? Thanks.

I think that may depend what country it happens in. I know a few boys in the forces who have lost their licences over here, so re-took their tests while stationed in Germany - all above board.

Some countries don't use the same system of points as us - I think it's France use short disqualification periods and fines.

in some countries they take your license off you and send it back to your contry with the info on so the ban is enforced in your country,have you handed it in to the court.

They are changing the rules in the next year or two.

Basically (as I understand it) it will mean that if you are convicted in an EU country, the details will get passed back to your country of licence origin and be applied to your licence.

I don't believe it is operation yet and no doubt if it involves any Government IT project it will be vastly over budget and severely delayed.

He hasn't been to Court yet. A breath test in the Algarve was inconclusive but he refused a blood test on the grounds of contracting hepatitis 35 years ago from an infected needle when having a tattoo. Has had to have a liver transplant because of it. He's been told he'll being tried for a crime of disobedience, doesn't need to attend court and could face a maximum of �150 fine. Has also been advised that the Judge may decide that he was unfit to drive through drink/drugs (anti-depressants) and could impose a ban.

This could affect your UK insurance if your UK ins. company found out, they usualy ask if you have any convictions for drunk driving.

If they can find a way of not paying out after an accident they will not pay out.
