My mate got pulled last night for no apparent reason. Anyway he eventually got told to produce his documents. He has only just realised that the copper who wrote the form has got 1 digit on his reg wrong & also put the model as Ford Mondeo whereas he was actually in an Audi. What should he do ?

if your mate has all the correct paperwork then he may as well turn up at the police station and point out the officers mistake. At least get some satisfaction out of it.

He should produce his documents as requested. The request is made of him, not his vehicle. Whether or not any offences come to light as a result of him producing (or failing to produce) the required documents will not be affected by the errors made on the form HORT1. However, failure to produce is an offence in itself and will be pursued even if your friend holds all the necessary paperwork.

Yes. Your mate will be in trouble if he fails to produce documents. He could also be in trouble if he fails to point out the mistake. Any reasonable person should be able to accept that he was too traumatised to notice the mistake immediately, but he needs to tell the law as soon as possible. He'd also be wise to have someone along with him as witness/backup to anything that's said.

And as redcrx points out, you can't beat that inner glow that you get when you prove a copper wrong.

It might also be useful to reflect on the reason that he was stopped. It would be an unusual officer who had time to stop vehicles for no reason. I was stopped by the police in 1961. I hope to go for another 40 years before it happens again.

i believe he has to produce his documents for inspection.

if the case went to court, it would be thrown out. the police have to present acurate evidence against the offender. wrong reg, make and model isnt acurate...

i know of a chap that broke the law on a motorbike some years ago, on new years day. the officer didnt have the correct year on his notes. he had put, as an example 2005 instead of 2006. it went to court and was thrown out on this error.

honesty is the best policy. Point out the mistake, making you look honest and they may even let this one go.
Wasn't that when you stopped driving Grunty?

your 'friend' may be in more trouble than he thinks, if he was stopped in a Mondeo with one reg number then produces paperwork and claims it was actually an Audi with a different number he may not be believed!

Did the police officer who stopped him not check his details through the PNC at the time? they normaly do.
