I am changing pads on the front disks, the caliper has an allen headed bolt at the top and a pin at the base,I started to undo the bolt but it has slackened off slightly but seems excessively tight .Do I continue and remove the bolt or do I remove the pin at the bottom.

you have to remove the bolt as it's the only way you will be able to dismantle the caliper.it's not unusual for this bolt to be tight, a little wd40 or similar will help
