Help needed with diagnosis of problem...very high pitch

noise coming from front wheel on drivers side about 50% of the time. It seems to be triggered by steering wheel movement and is temporarily silenced in final stages of braking. I know its not brake pads as they're less than a year old and car has just passed MOT. Gratefull for any help. (ps Its a peugot 106 / x reg)

Sounds like it could be a wheel bearing on it's way out. Jack up the car at the drivers side. hold the wheel with both hands. Now try and rock it. If there is movement, you need a new bearing.

i had a similar problem with a different car . i jacked each wheel up to find which side the noise was coming from by spinning the wheel. when i found that out i took the wheel off to find a metal shield had been slightly bent and it was rubbing on the brake disc.bent it back, job done. hope this helps.

With due respect it could still be the brake pads/disc try next time you hear the noise to gently press the brake pedal without steering wheel movement whilst in motion and see if the noise stops worth eliminating this part first.,you state noise about 50% of time does this happen when you get in and drive straight away or after a time when thing get warm/hot? if it happens after the car has been driven for a while I am going for brakes/disc.

just cause ur car passed its mot doesnt mean that the brakes are 100%!!!!! it sounds maybe ur brakes may need deglazed or if fitted the anti rattle shims are too close to the discs causing the noise or even a wheel bearing! does it get worse at high speeds? is it noisy when u turn to the right or left slighty when driving? they are the symtoms of a bearing worn

The noise definately gets worse when turning (can't remember which way) then stops if you turn the wheel the opposite direction. The noise changes pitch slightly as the speed increases.

is it a droaning noise or rumbling noise sounds like wheel bearing

It's probably just the brake pads vibrating, take them out put a small dab of high temprature grease (copaslip) on the back of each pad and replace.

Keep the grease well away from the friction surface!

Just taken my van in because of high pitch noise when steering it turned out to be a oil leak.
