Pop along to a car supermarket and get a feel for what cars are available for your budget and then do your homework and work out how much it will be to insure and service.
Vauxhall and Ford are good low maintenance cars. Renault and Peugeot may be ok to insure but the 'bits' usually cost a little more. Honda are good reliable cars and the insurance isnt too bad. VW/BMW will give you the slightly sportier look and feel but will hammer you on servicing and insurance.
