oscar wilde's voice

Recently somebody posted a question in another section about who has the loveliest voice. It reminded me of something I once read about Oscar Wilde. One of his contemporaries had said his voice was beautiful, reminiscent of brown velvet. I can't quite decide whether I like that or not - but I've never forgotten the phrasing. My challenge to you is of course to pick a well-known voice and describe it, synesthetically or otherwise. I don't want the far-fetched, I want the unforgettably spot-on... No two people perceive things the same, of course, but come on, give it a go.

I foresee me (living in Sweden) not knowing half of the voices you'll mention... but hey I'm not the only reader here, so never mind that. Come on!

...ok, so, asking for "the unforgettably spot-on" may have been a bit demanding on my part... Please, permit me to rephrase that: I'm hoping not for the far-fetched but for the simple yet spot-on descriptions.

I'll go first:

James Mason's voice: Goose bumps included.

My own voice has been described as: "submissive in nature, with the potential for fireworks before too long".

I always think that James Nesbitt's voice (he is Irish and was in 'Cold Feet' amongst other things) actually sounds like how it would feel to dip my toes into warm, runny chocolate.

Sorry, that might not be what you were after... but it allowed me to indulge in my own little fantasy!

Audio clips, quickly! jno, that's brilliant. I'm not familiar with Joan Greenwood, but I swear I hear her now. (And Bailey's would be a cat's drug of choice...!) mccfluff, I'm kinda blushing too. They don't make pervs like that anymore! purpose, the way your voice was described makes me suspect you sing...? James Nesbitt, yes I do know him, Cold Feet aired here too. One of the funniest things I've ever seen was the episode where he brought his baby to nursery school - which he wasn't used to doing - and he and all the competent mothers were sitting around in a circle singing some children's song that everybody else knew, and everybody else knew where to clap and wave and stomp et cetera, but he didn't. Oh well I guess you had to be there...

A commentator on the US National Public Radio show All Things Considered is asking listeners to write in with their descriptions of the voices of Marilyn Monroe, Truman Capote, Morgan Freeman and Patsy Cline. His idea was inspired by his daughter's description of Ella Fitzgerald's voice as "diamonds dipped in caramel." If I catch his report back, I'll let you know.

Ella Fitzgerald's voice diamonds dipped in caramel... that's mind-blowing, thank you! The other three voices are an interesting choice as well, hope you hear/heard the results.
