White triangles

I live outside the UK and have just returned from a week's holiday there (driving around the south west of England).

I noticed in several places that series of white triangles were painted along the edge of the road. Am I correct in thinking that the purpose of these is to indicate a hazard such as a change of speed limit? On previous trips to the UK I haven't seen these triangles.

if the white triangles where before a junction it means give way,

I believe they are a traffic calming device to give the impression of the road narrowing and therefore people, supposedly, slow down. Often found along country roads at the entrances to villages, therefore where the speed limit reduces as you suppose.

Yes, Fitzer, now you mention it, there seemed to be a series of smaller triangles followed by a series of larger one and they were on minor roads.

On a different subject, one thing which we found really annoying was the large number of direction signs which were obscured by trees. That is really dangerous when you're trying to read them (it's nice to get a confirmation of what the GPS tells you because it's not always right!).
