i'm no expert but i got an idea!!

  1. remove the oil-filler cap (usally plastic, on the top of the engine)

  2. locate the sump plug and oil filter, usually on the underside of the engine facing downward, hexagonal screw.

  3. start to unscrew making sure u have a container ready to catch the oil!!

  4. do the last bit of unscrewing by hand and let the oil flow into the container.

  5. check the sump plug for metal filings! the end is magnetic, any metal bits on it may mean the engine is degrading

  6. unscrew the oil filter, technically it can be done by hand, but due to position and contraction this is not possible, a chain wrench is a good tool to use.

  7. when the oil is finished draining and the old filter is off, place the new one on. apply a thin layer of oil to the thread of the new filter to ensure pure contact. screw to hand tightness only!!

  8. replace the sump plug, one half turn with the spanner past hand tightness

  9. clean the dipstick and replace it. add the new oil, a pint at a time and allow 30 seconds to run through the engine, then check dipstick again.

  10. fill until upper level of the dipstick.

  11. close everything, turn the engine on make sure there is no oil warning light, and make sure there are no leaks in the system.
Warning! dont change oil if engine is hot!! however, it is a good idea to slightly heat the engine for about 30 seconds to allow the oil to flow easier!!

Also if u need to jack the car up to get at the sump plug, make sure you place some sort of axle stands as back up.

i hope this helps and i hope my instructions arent too confusing, its hard to tell someone how to do something when u cant see it!!

As you do not say what year your Astra is no one can give you the correct instructions including me!

The first answer does not tell you to make sure the oil is warm so it flows out easier and gives you the wrong location for the filter. You do not apply a thin layer of oil to the new filter thread you apply it to the rubber seal on the filter. you screw the new filter on using hand tightness but get it as tight as you can. It is a waste of time cleaning the dipstick as the new oil will give you false readings, clean it and redip after you top up. After running the engine re dip the level and top up, the level will have dropped.

In the second answer running the oil for 30 sec will not warm the oil at all, drive your car about 5 miles!

If your Astra is around a 1996 model the oil fiter is on the front of the engine crankcase facing forwards, the drain plug is on the rear edge of the sump in the middle.

Kwik Fit used to do an oil and filter change very cheap, give them a call you may find its not worth getting your hands dirty.
kwik fit also rip u off

Kwik Fit do an oil and filter change for about 20?

I pay more than that just for the oil I put in my car!

If you want crap oil and a cheap filter and some old oil left in your engine (because they only let it drain for a few seconds) go to Halfords.
