I am contracted to work 40 hours a week. Over 2 hours of my day are spent travelling to and from my place of work, is that classed as part of my working day?

unless it's in your contract, no
I wish, your 40 hours are contracted from when you start work not when you leave the house for work.
Only two hours? That's not bad at all.

Sadly it's your own time.
If you have a permanent base from which you work set hours then you travel there and back in your own time and at your own expense. If you are for example a social worker you may be allowed to start your day from home if you are en route to a business-related meeting. Ditto at the end of the day if you don't HAVE to go back to the office. It all depends on your employer.
You could choose a job closer to home, or a home closer to your job, but unless you are a mobile employee (and even then there are usually some stipulations) then you are, unfortunately, out of luck. Nice try though.
