You have to remember this was in the Daily Mail, and needs to be taken with a pinch of salt. The Mail is dedicated to the downfall of New Labour, but can't make their mind up about the Tories, as they also don't want Dave, Cameron that is, as the leader.
Anyhow, let's get back to the main subject.
In my edition of the Mail it reports what you MIGHT pay, whereas you said that in your edition it stated what you WILL pay.

In my Daily Mail, they reported all this arose from a cross-party Environmental Audit Committee. Now like most Parliamentary commitees this type of report is regulary released to judge what public reaction will be.
There seems to be more of these committee reports than I've had hot dinners, and very few of their findings ever make it to the statute book.
So I'm not holding my breath at the moment, But I do agree that something has to be done about the overcrowding of our roads, as long as any new regulations doesn't affect me, of course!!

There should be no road tax, only tax on fuel.
Big car, lots of miles= a lot of tax.
Big car, very low miles= less tax.
Small car, lots of miles = more tax.
Small car, low miles = low tax.
Taxing a car on engine size is stupid, and to prove it...There two different levels of tax for the little two seater Smart? Both have the same size engine....600cc, but one pays only 40 per year and the other more than double at 100.

I doubt if they would implement it.
However I would like to bet that a few weeks before the next budget, the idea gets dropped, with news reports etc, then when Brown wallops another 10p per litre on, everybody thinks it's not too bad, and we could have been worse off with excise duty. Clever boogers these politicians.

I solved this problem years ago ( But nobody listens to me ! ). Dh is right about putting the tax on the fuel at the pump. But why can't we have MOT, insurance, licence details on a card so when you buy fuel you have to insert the card first. If all is right then no problem. When some scrote with no insurance try's to buy fuel, he can't. The 60k a year rep pays tax for what he uses and granny smith who uses her mini to go the shops half a mile away once a week pays for what she uses. Makes sense to me!
