A light came on today with a picture of a car and a spanner going through it. what does this mean? i've had the car for about a year now and i've never seen it before. cheers

It is the electronic diagnostic light (sister light to the engine management light) It means the car has found a fault and need to be plugged into a diagnostic machine to find out what happened.
It sounds like the service due light to me

ok i'll bite. what does rtfm stand for?
A polite version would be RTM or Read The Manual - now you know what RTFM stands for
Double checked with an Astra handbook and it is a electronic warning light. The service indicator is a counting down mileage total when you turn the ignition on.
