Speed limits

The usual scare mongering from this government was alive and well today by suggesting that the speed limits be reduced in many places!
I personally feel that the single carrigeway should remain at (Nat Sp) 60 for cars but motorways should be raised to 80.

Am I alone in this? All the radio people today were saying what a good idea this was. Excuse me..........

Over 70% of road fatalities occur in 30mph zones. Only 2% occur on motorways(70mph). So how does having more 30mph zones make the roads safer? (Who will be the first to see the flaw in this argument?, but I thought I'd post it anyway!)

why is it that it is only the uk that just wont leave things alone.

It's alright for you lot in England, quite a few local roads on Anglesey where I am have suddenly been dropped from 60mph to 50mph!
And we have The Ayatolla Brunstrom of the Speed camera Regime to contend with.

Problem is that the country is utterly overcrowded with traffic. I can hardly get up to a decent speed on my M/C. It is never in top gear due to the crap cars in my way. T|he back roads roads are still fun and will be , unless the KGB put cameras on them too. I'll have to let my luggage over hang the numberplate again ! ho ,ho.

Obviously you really experienced drivers know more than the experts. Most accident seem to occur on single carriage way national speed limit road,so if cutting speed cuts death then so be it. 30 MPH as far as i'm aware as not been mentioned.

R'n'r, sddsddean (above) claims 70% of fatal accidents occur in 30mph areas. So who's is right? Let's see your sources.

I think everyone ahs missed the point - just think of the cash raising possibilities by doing this...

The 60 m.p.h. national speed limit applies on single carriageway A and B roads in rural areas. It also applies to rural single-track roads where there is a tractor or a herd of cattle round the next corner. These are the ones where sensible drivers don't go much over 40.

But, Grunty, if a person is daft enough to do 60 down a narrow lane, towards a blind bend, is having a 40 limit on the road going to stop them doing that?! Is there going to be a speed camera on that road? No, because it wouldn't raise any cash. So everyone will just ignore the new limit.

Unenforceable or stupid laws just bring the whole law system into disrepute.

But if a 'normal', reasonable A-class road, where by-and-large it would be safe to do 60, were restricted to 40 or 50, loads of money could be raised by having a camera. Or what about the 'big' sc trunk roads EG A17, bits of the A52, A38. These are usually big, well-maintained roads, with proper junctions, no serious bends. Limited to 40-50, a veritable gold-mine.

So let me guess where the greatest impact of these proposals will be seen... It ain't going to be on country lanes.
