Over-revving in neutral and gear change?!

I've noticed that when i'm driving, usually at higher speeds (i.e. 60mph) when i put the clutch down to change gear, the engine revs higher, sits at high revs for a few seconds and THEN drops. My foot is definitely not still on the accelerator! Its not just the rev counter either because i can hear the engine over-revving. Whats going on and has anyone else had this?

I drive a mk4 ford fiesta by the way... Thanks in advance!

sounds like the idle stepper motor not returning as ift should. you can sometimes remove and clean but more often than not it requires replaceing. you could just disconnect it all together but this sometimes effects the engine ecu.
