Which breakdown cover

It time for me to get some car breakdown cover. The RAC and AA seem very expensive. Which is the cheapest cover that covers you for most things?

Green Flag is probably the cheapest, but on experience i found when calling them out they could never fix the problem and just towed me home or to a garage.

AA is more pricey but they give a great service ( sure you'd appreciate paying the extra if you did ever get caught and broke down )

Is your car insurance due soon. I got mine via 'Budget' and they through in full breakdown cover with RAC included in my insurance.

Half way down the page you will see a paragraph headed 'Broken Down?'

They give you a freephone number to ring, and a reference number to give, if you have broken down. You will get Roadside assistance sent to you, though obviously you will be 'invited' to join there and then.

You would need to check regulary that this promotion is still on offer, making sure the reference number to quote hasn't changed.

My breakdown cover ran out about 3 months ago, and currently I'm using this method to be 'covered'. So for this period it hasn't cost me anything.

In the 3 months I've been using it they have not changed either the telephone number, or the reference number.

I've been with Autonational Rescue for years and I've always been happy with their service.

Basic roadside cover is nominally �40p.a. but, as long as you've not had a breakdown in the past 12 months, that's reduced by 25% (i.e. it's only �30p.a.)

At the other end of the scale, the full package (roadside cover, recovery, home address cover and emergency accommodation & travel costs) is �88. Once again, however, there's 25% off if you've not had a breakdown in the past 12 months. (i.e. the cost is �66).

Additionally, new members get 15 months cover for the price of 12.

I have always been pleased with Britannia and find them reasonable.

I was a member of the AA for a year after passing my test - I learnt with the AA, so it was free.
The one time I had reason to call them out, they insisted the garage I was stopped in didn't exist, in fact the bypass didn't either, despite them both being there for at least 5 years. After 1 hour of waiting, I managed to get the car going myself.
I never renewed.
I have never had any need for breakdown recovery since, despite having old bangers, so I don't think any of them are worthwhile.
