ice age 2 the meltdown

Hope someone can help, my son is playing this game on the PS2 and he is at the bit where the squirrel/racoon type animal has to climb the tree, he has been tossed back up by the mammoth when he fell and thrown to the side by the bird in the tree but he cannot find a way up the tree and it's driving him (and me!) mad. I hope this isn't too vague!!
